Cattle, Goats, Swine

The livestock courses offered at UH Hilo include Ruminant Production and Swine Production as well as the related courses on reproduction, breeding, genetics and anatomy and physiology. All of the courses are aimed at giving students hands-on experiences working with livestock through farm laboratory activities. The courses emphasize safe and confident animal handling and and good animal husbandry practices. These courses prepare students for employment opportunities with farms or ranches, or to prepare them for admission into graduate degree programs in the veterinary or animal science fields.

Goats

Goat and Sheep production (ANSC 355) is a class that is taught at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo. The class is offered during the spring semester and focuses on introducing students to general practices regarding the raising of small ruminants (goats and sheep). This includes handling, processing, health management, forage management, records keeping, nutrition and feeding, and breeds and breeding.

Breeds used: Boer crosses (meat goats)

This course has recently been combined with Cattle Production.

Cattle

Beef cattle production (ANSC 342) is a class that is taught at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo. The class is offered during the fall semester and focuses on introducing students to general practices regarding beef cattle. This includes handling, health management, forage management, records and economics, nutrition and feeding, and breeds and breeding.

Breeds used: Angus and South Poll crosses

This course has recently been combined with Goat and Sheep Production.

Swine

Swine production (ANSC 351) is a class that is taught at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The class is offered during the fall semester and focuses on introducing students to general practices involved with raising pigs. This includes housing systems, health management, feeding, breeds, reproduction, pork quality, crossbreeding systems, and selection.

Breeds used: Landrace, Yorkshire, Duroc
